Our beautiful jute rugs are perfect for a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces. Lovingly crafted from natural fibre, these rugs can give an earthy, organic feel to your home. If you are looking for rugs online and want to create an insta-worthy, natural space, a Miss Amara jute rug might be just right for you! As with all of our rugs, shipping is free Australia wide, even our extra large rugs.

What is Jute?

Jute is a natural vegetable fibre grown in tropical climates such as India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Myanmar and Pakistan. The fibre itself has a shiny appearance, and when woven into textiles, results in a natural beige, light brown or white colour and a coarser feel underfoot. This makes jute carpets a popular choice for those looking to incorporate coastal or bohemian vibes into their favourite room. In fact, jute rugs are some of the best sellers in our boho rug and modern rug collections!

Why Should I Get My Jute Rug From Miss Amara?

Only Miss Amara has the finest quality jute rugs, sourced from all over the world and curated by our expert stylists. Our rugs are shipped to you with unmatched efficiency and care, plus, we offer free delivery, Australia wide (no matter what size rug).

We even have professional stylists on hand to help you choose the right jute rug - all you need to do is send us some pics of your room and we can do the rest!

Last but certainly not least, we have a Risk-Free Returns policy, which is pretty unique in the rug world. We totally understand that buying a rug online is a big deal, which is why we want you to be able to buy your rug and not worry if it’s not the right fit. If you find for whatever reason you don’t like your new rug, just return it in 30 days for a full refund or exchange.

How To Style A Jute Rug

A jute rug is perfect if you are looking to channel peace, tranquility and natural vibes in your home.

These rugs are best suited to light coloured flooring - either wood or carpet - as the natural fibres will shed over time, which can be more noticeable on darker floors.

Layering is also a great option for jute carpets, as the natural, neutral tones can wonderfully complement more bold designs.

In terms of where to put your rug, opt for high traffic areas, as jute rugs are designed to be sturdy and withstand lots of wear and tear! Jute runner rugs are perfect for hallways or more narrow spaces.

Ultimately though, how you style your rug is really down to personal choice. Jute rugs are really versatile and we have lots of different styles to choose from!

This includes a gorgeous curated selection of tribal rugs, nature rugs, round rugs, hallway rugs and more. And believe it or not, we also have a whole rainbow of colours to choose from outside of your standard beige rugs or brown rugs. A green rug would be great for a nature themed room, while a blue rug is perfect for an oceanic theme. Alternatively, if you’re going for monochromatic, try a white jute rug or black jute rug instead.

Scroll up to view the full collection or use the filters on the side to choose your favourite style. And remember, you don’t have to worry about choosing the wrong rug! We have a 30-day risk free returns policy - we call it our “Try At home” service 😉

Is Jute Cotton?

Jute and cotton are similar, but not the same. They are both derived from natural fibres, but come from different plants: jute comes from the sturdy stalks of the jute plant, while cotton is derived from the soft padding around the seeds of the cotton plant. As such, cotton rugs may feel softer to the touch than jute rugs, which have a coarser stiffer feel and are more durable.

Is Jute Sisal?

No, jute and sisal are two different types of natural fibres, although they are similar. Sisal is extracted from Agave plants in South America, while Jute comes from the Jute Plant in Southeast Asia. Jute rugs are naturally beige or light brown, while sisal rugs are usually a darker brown or coffee colour.

How To Clean A Jute Rug

Cleaning a jute rug is actually pretty easy! However, as they are a natural fibre rug, you just need to take different steps than you would for a rug made from synthetic material.

Can Jute Rugs Get Wet?

It is strongly recommended not to get your jute rugs wet, as excessive water will likely lead to discolouration or mould. Avoid hosing your rug, as well as high-moisture areas and spillages.

Regular Cleaning For Jute Rugs

The best way to keep your jute rug clean is to regularly vacuum it. This will help to get rid of dirt that can accumulate over time within the jute fibres. Use a strong vacuum suction to get rid of visible dirt.

Regular vacuuming is a great idea even when there is no dirt visible - it helps to prevent soil build-up and can increase the life of your rug.

You can also combine vacuuming with a dry cleaning powder - just use a stiff bristle brush to work in the powder and vacuum over the top.

Removing Spills and Stains

It is important to take care and try not to spill anything on your jute rug, as the natural jute fibres are absorbent, so it may be difficult to remove a stain if a spillage happens. If you do spill something on the rug, immediately use a cloth to blot the excess liquid. Do not rub the spill.

Next, use a hair dryer to remove as much moisture as possible.

Finally, sprinkle some baking soda, wait for 15 minutes and then vacuum the area.

Removing Mildew

To remove mildew from your jute rug, you will need to use bleach and water in a spray bottle and test the mixture first to ensure that no discolouration occurs.

First, mix 1 part bleach with 6 parts water in a spray bottle. Spray a small area on the underside of the rug - this is because you want to test if discolouration occurs, so it is best to test in a small area that will not be seen by anyone. If you do see some discolouration, dilute the mixture further and try again.

Once you are happy with the mixture, lightly spray the mildew-affected area of your jute rug and work it in with a soft brush. After 10 or so minutes, rub the area with a dry cloth.

IMPORTANT: Do not drench, soak or otherwise use an excessive amount of water, as this will discolour or damage the rug (see below).

Fixing Curled Rug Corners

Over time, you may find the corners of your Jute Rug may begin to curl - especially if it is in a high traffic area. This is completely normal and super easy to fix! All you need to do is dampen the curled with a cloth to weigh it down, and leave it overnight. You may need to do this a few times, depending on how curled the corners are. Again, do not soak or drench the rug, as this can damage it.

What Not To Do When Cleaning Your Jute Rug

It is important with jute rugs to not use excessive amounts of water, as this will change the colour of the rug permanently and potentially cause mould to grow. This is because jute is a natural, absorbent fibre. Never hose or drench your jute rug, and keep it away from high-moisture areas such as the bathroom or laundry.

Do Jute Rugs Shed?

Yes, over time, jute rugs will shed, as they are hand-woven from natural fibres. Luckily, this isn’t super noticeable as a lot of the shedding will occur under the rug. If you do notice some loose fibers, simply vacuum them up with a strong suction vacuum cleaner. It’s also best to pair a jute rug with lighter flooring so any loose fibres stand out less.

Do Jute Rugs Need A Pad or Underlay?

Jute rugs shouldn’t scratch the floor underneath, however a rug underlay is still recommended for safety (as with any rug, you don’t want someone slipping around unexpectedly!)

How Are Jute Rugs Made?

Jute rugs are hand woven by skilled artisans. They shape and weave dried jute crop into the lustrous, golden and dyed rugs you see on this page.

But before this can happen, the jute plant is harvested through a process called retting, where they are submerged in water for up to 30 days. This causes the outer layer to fall away leaving only the usable fibres behind.

The fibres are washed and dried and delivered for hand weaving - they are often referred to as “gold fibre” in this state. The fibres may also be dyed if the artisans are weaving a specific colour of jute rug.

Are Jute Rugs Eco-Friendly?

Jute rugs are some of the most eco-friendly rugs you can buy! This is because they are hand-made from natural fibres, so they are not synthetic or chemically treated and don’t use up a lot of energy when produced. They are also great from a sustainability standpoint - jute is often grown without fertiliser and fed with rainwater only.
