The right rug makes all the difference.
Understanding rug sizes.
Choosing the right size rug can transform your room - grounding your furniture, creating balance, and defining the flow of your space. A rug does more than decorate, it defines how a space feels. Too small, and your room can appear disconnected. Too large, and the balance is lost – the room feels overwhelmed, the proportions off. Just right, and everything comes together in harmony.
How to choose the right rug size.
Living room.
A living room rug should frame your seating and bring everything into one inviting zone. Living spaces work best when placing the front legs of your sofa on the rug. This will keep your space feeling open, and grounded.
- Small: 160 × 230 cm
- Standard: 190 × 290 cm
- Large: 240 × 330 cm or 300 × 400 cm
Leave around 20–30 cm between the rug edge and your walls to keep the room feeling open.
Bedroom.
A bedroom rug softens the space and adds warmth underfoot. Position the rug two-thirds under the bed, extending out from the sides and base to create visual balance.
Recommended sizes:
- Queen Bed: 240 x 330 cm
- King Bed: 300 × 400 cm
- Runners: 80 × 300 cm each side for narrow rooms
For a cosy feel, ensure your rug extends at least 50 cm beyond each side of the bed.
Dining room.
A dining room rug frames your dining furniture, and should extend beyond the chairs when they are pulled back. A rug gently grounds the room, drawing people together for shared meals and conversation.
- 6 Seater Rectangle: 290 × 200 cm
- 8 Seater Rectangle: 330 × 240 cm
- Standard Round: 240 cm
Choose a flatweave or washable rug for easy maintenance under mealtime mess.
Outdoor.
Bring the comfort of indoors outside. An outdoor rug helps define your seating or dining area, softens underfoot surfaces, and creates a natural extension of your home.
Recommended sizes:
- Small balcony or patio: 160 × 230 cm
- Standard outdoor lounge: 190 x 290 cm
- Large entertaining space: 240 x 330 cm or 300 x 400 cm
Choose a size that frames your outdoor seating or dining set. Keep all front furniture legs on the rug to define the zone without covering the entire patio.
Play areas.
A soft, cushioned base sets the tone for creativity and comfort. In shared play areas or kids’ rooms, a rug or playmat defines the zone, provides sound absorption, and adds a tactile layer for safe, comfortable play.
Recommended sizes:
- Round 200 x 200
- Standard play zone: 200 x 140
- Large shared space: 300 × 200 a Round 200 x 200
For multipurpose rooms, choose patterns that blend seamlessly with your interior style, beautiful enough to leave down long after playtime ends. For nooks, or smaller nursery spaces, add a playmat or an irregular shaped rug.
