How do you clean area rugs without a machine?
Whether it’s a beloved wool flatweave, a soft pile underfoot in the nursery, or a textural centrepiece in the living room, and while each fibre and weave has its own specific needs, we’ve provided a brief overview on how to give your rug the TLC it deserves, no machine required below.
1. Start With a Good Shake (or Beat)
Take the rug outside and shake it out to loosen dirt, dust, and debris. For larger rugs, drape it over a railing or sturdy clothesline and give it a few firm whacks with a broom or rug beater.
Think of it as your rug’s deep exhale, releasing all the energy it’s been holding.
2. Vacuum (Gently)
Use a vacuum without a beater bar (or with it turned off) and vacuum both sides. This helps lift surface dust while protecting the rug’s fibres — especially important for natural fibres like wool, jute, or viscose.
3. Spot Clean Spills and Marks
Mix a gentle solution:
- A few drops of mild dish soap in cold water
- Dampen a clean microfiber cloth (never soak)
- Blot the stain – don’t rub
Work from the outside in to avoid spreading. Always do a patch test in an inconspicuous spot first.
4. Deodorise With Baking Soda
Sprinkle baking soda lightly over the rug and let it sit for 15–30 minutes. Then vacuum it up to lift odours and refresh the pile.
This step works especially well in homes with pets or high foot traffic, but make sure it works for the specific fibre you have.
5. Dry Thoroughly
If you’ve used any moisture, make sure your rug dries completely to prevent mildew:
- Lay it flat in a shaded, breezy spot
- Avoid direct sunlight to prevent fading
