What is a traditional rug?
A traditional rug is usually a piece inspired by classic designs like Oriental rugs in rich and intricate detail, Iranian rugs with classic styling patterns, tribal geometric patterning of traditionally diamond shapes and which typically embrace similar colour schemes to those found in these ancient works of art. There is also a particular feel to antique pieces which we have taken particular attention to mimic, generating modern designs in distressed looks and similar underfoot pile experiences to the ancient examples we were inspired by.
Persian rugs have been a byword for opulence and luxury for centuries and the reason for this is that traditional rugs from the Middle Eastern regions including Afghan rugs and Moroccan rugs, are long lasting large traditional wool rugs that usually handmade using time intensive and ancient techniques. These are usually hand knotted or woven from high quality wool and were originally used by nomadic tribes throughout both snow capped mountainous regions as well as the sandy desserts like the sweeping Sahara. The design for these antique style rugs varied from region to region with traditional rugs from Morocco featuring sometimes bright and colourful styles in blue, pink and yellow or, as seen in the Berber rug range, more muted black and white motifs. Popularised in the mid century by European designers and a staple in Scandi interior design ever since, the Berber rug is a thick shag rug ideal for placement anywhere in the home including the lounge and dining room.
The black and white Berber is also available as a hallway runner rug and our traditional rug runners and floor rugs Persian inspired designs include brightly coloured pieces for placement everywhere. They can mark out transition routes through narrow halls without overcrowding a space, they can be used alongside your bed in bedrooms for bursts of colour and texture, soft pile and feet warming throughout the cooler months. Our collection embraces every tone, texture and type with traditional cream and white rugs celebrating simplistic and minimalist design, grey rugs perfect for high contrast furnishings or muted and laid back spaces, green rugs for an injection of natural and earthy tones, and flatweave outdoor rugs in natural cotton and jute.
Our round rugs include traditional rug styles in floral and medallion motifs and are ideal for placement under round tables in particular but can be used in smaller spaces effectively where rectangles either won’t fit or otherwise offer harsh angles which reduces the appearance of available space.
