How Are Wool Rugs Made?
Skilled artisans have been using wool to weave rugs for centuries, making it the most common rug material in both flat weave & tufted rugs. When woven into a wool rug, the fibre produces a dense, soft, natural feel to the hand & underfoot making it the most enjoyable rug to walk on.
Wool is obtained from sheep, and depending on where the sheep are raised will affect the quality of wool. Our wool is sourced from New Zealand - well renowned for its best in class quality and feel.
The wool is cleaned, spun into yarn and dyed, before being shipped for production. The wool is then carefully braided or tufted, either by hand or in some cases, by machine (all of our Miss Amara Collection is hand woven), row by row until the finished rug is ready.
How To Style A Wool Rug
Our natural wool rugs come in a huge variety of colours and patterns, making the potential styling options endless.
Grey wool rugs are a versatile option due to the neutral colour palette - you could try placing it in a high traffic area such as the dining room or living room, for a neutral, stylish look. Cream and white wool rugs can both bring a wonderful, sophisticated lightness to a room, while black is great for a more chic, out-there kind of look. In terms of shape, round wool rugs of all colours are best suited to more open areas in the house rather than specific rooms. At the moment our only round wool rug is the popular Dresden design, which goes great in homes with neutrals, blues or yellows.
For a more boho look, try our braided wool rugs - you can still get that light, airy feel, as well as the warmth and comfort that a wool carpet brings. How To Clean A Wool Rug
Wool rugs are one of the easiest rugs to keep clean.
A good starting point is to vacuum your rug regularly. If your wool throw rug has fringes, start from the centre and vacuum outwards, to avoid damage.
You also want to make sure that you rotate your rug from time to time, to prevent sun fading or increased wear in a particular spot.
To do a deep clean (this should only be necessary once in a while), just follow the steps below.
- Shake out the dirt from your wool throw rug. You can do this by hanging the rug up on a clothesline or bannister on a sunny day, and beating it all over with a broom.
- Vacuum the wool rug thoroughly on both sides.
- Fill a bucket with cold water and mix with a gentle detergent (one or two tablespoons of detergent powder).
- Using gentle pressure, get a sponge and lightly scrub the rug with the detergent solution. You will need to make sure you rinse your rug frequently as it will pick up a lot of dirt.
- To “rinse” the area you have just cleaned, dip a fresh sponge in clean water and go over the area again. Important: do not drench or soak the rug as it is made from natural fibres.
- Use some towels to blot up the moisture.
- Allow the rug to dry completely before putting it back on the rug underlay.
Do Wool Rugs Shed?
You will notice some shedding over time, as wool is a natural fibre. Not to worry though! Regular vacuuming is a simple solution, and most of the shedding will occur in the first few months. Wool tends to shed less than other natural fibre rugs such as jute rugs and sisal rugs.
